Birth To Three Matters

Birth To Three Matters is a framework to support children in their earliest years. The framework is a guidance for people working with babies and toddlers. It is backed and funded by the government.  This framework is the first of its kind and encourages practitioners to recognise that a child’s earliest years are very important to their later development. The framework has been organised into four sections known as ‘aspects’. Each aspect has been sub-divided into four components. The four aspects are:

The Foundation Phase

Children learn through first hand experiential activities with the serious business of ‘play’ providing the vehicle. Through their play, children practice and consolidate their learning, play with ideas, experiment, take risks, solve problems, and make decisions individually, in small and in large groups. First hand experiences allow children to develop an understanding of themselves and the world in which they live. The development of children’s self image and feelings of self worth and self esteem are at the core of this phase.

The Foundation Phase sets out seven learning areas which are:

    * Personal and social development, well being and cultural diversity

    * Language, literacy and communication skills

    * Mathematical development
    * Welsh language development

    * Physical Development
    * Creative Development
    * Knowledge and understanding of the world
